A traditional Marlow pub with boutique rooms, good food and a wide selection of ales – perfect for a weekend away.

This long-established Marlow pub, bang in the heart of town and just footsteps from the river, has been a popular place for a pint and a bite for a while. But it has recently opened some upstairs accommodation, which has quickly made it perhaps the best and most reasonably priced place to stay in town, with a set of contemporary and rather stylish rooms that are in deliberate contrast to the pub downstairs, which is a fairly traditional old joint with a long bar furnished with old ships’ timbers and ornate cornicing that serves local Brakspear's ales on draft; the dining room has a more modern feel and offers a very reasonably priced menu of good quality and British dishes and pub grub classics, including a range of excellent steaks and burgers, pork belly, BBQ ribs, a good Caesar Salad as well more basic dishes at lunchtime (ham and eggs and the like) and a Sunday Carvery. There's also the adjoining Churchill Tap, which serves a hiuge list of craft ales from all over the world, along with delicious basket meals to soak up all that ale – who would have thought they would come back into fashion?

All the rooms except one boast comfy king-size beds, and they all have luxurious bathrooms with high-pressure rain showers and Temple Spa toiletries (one also has a free-standing slipper bath); they also have Freeview TVs  and good wifi, tea-making facilities, Nespresso coffee machines and homemade biscuits. Marlow itself is easy to reach by car or by train and has a excellent location by the Thames, a lively centre with lots of indy shops that is convenient for riverside walks and some great walking country in the nearby Chilterns to really blow the cobwebs away. All things considered, it's an excellent choice for a weekend away.
