The Gower Peninsula was Britain's first designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty – 34 miles of amazing coastline – and YHA Port Eynon is the perfect base for exploring it. It's got a lot of charm, housed in a converted lifeboat station on what is perhaps the most beautiful bay on the whole peninsula.
It's not huge – just 28 beds
in eight rooms, comprising a mix of dorms and family rooms (one of them en-suite), plus a 3-beddded room that has a double bed. There's lots of character throughout, and fantastic sea views from the lounge – dining area, self-catering kitchen and wood-burning stove complete the picture, and it's located right in the heart of a classic seaside village, with its bucket-and-spade shop and ice creams.
There is a brilliant beach, where you can swim, go rock-pooling and go wind- or kite-surfing, and there are good places to swim too at nearby Rhossili and Oxwich beaches, which you can easily reach on the Wales Coastal Path, which goes right through the village. You can also go paddleboarding and in summer take a trip with Gower Coast Adventures, who run seal-spotting and other excursions from their base at Oxwich, where you could also look in on Oxwich Castle. All in all, a peach of a seaside hostel, and a perfect base for summer explorations of this beautiful area.
