The gorgeously sited old farmhouse has been given a makeover, and hostel stays here are better than ever, now that there's a new self-catering kitchen and redecorated rooms with more up-to-date furniture. It hasn't lost all its sense of tradition – it's self-catering only and the nearest shop is 3 miles away, along an unmade road – but there are some twin-bed and private rooms available, either in the old Pembrokeshire farmhouse or one of the converted outbuildings. No private facilities though – all the bathrooms are shared. The log-burner in the lounge keeps things warm on chilly nights.
The location is lovely, on the lower slopes of Carn Llidi, although if you’re surfing you really need a car to access Whitesands, which is about a mile away.

Head to St Davids from Fishguard or Haverfordwest on the A487. Turn off just outside St Davids onto the B4583 and follow signs to Whitesands Bay. Turn right by the golf club and follow the YHA signs.
