YHA Holmbury St Mary YHA
Situated in the heart of the Surrey Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, this hostel feels extraordinarily bucolic, despite being so close to London, which is less than an hour away by train to nearby Dorking. It's a homely place, the perfect woodland retreat, with 47 beds and a great atmosphere, partly because of its location in the middle of some 4000 acres of beautiful woodland countryside. Facilities include a licensed bar, large dining room, lounge, cycle hire and storage, and if you don't fancy the hostel you can camp in the grounds, plus there are two well-appointed bell tents for glamping fans. Whatever sort of accommodation you plump for, there is loads to do in the surrounding area – the Edwardian stately home of Polesden Lacey, now owned by the National Trust, Box Hill, where you can walk or cycle to your heart's content – and indeed any number of other walking options throughout the Surrey Hills. Get yourself an OS map and explore – the capital could be a million miles away.
47 beds in all, including 1 x 3 bedded (one double bed with a single bunk over the top) room, 2 x 2 bedded rooms and 10 x 4 bedded rooms, along with 15 camping spaces and 2 bell tents.
Beds from £13, private rooms from £39, family rooms from £35, camping from £12.50 per person, bell tents from around £65 per night.
Open all year.
The hostel is 2 miles south of Abinger Hammer on the A25 between Guildford and Dorking. Follow signs to Holmbury St Mary on B2126, the hostel is signposted (look out for a yellow grit bin). If using satnav, ensure you enter the postcode, not just the road name (there are two Radnor Lanes in Holmbury!).
