Housed in a newly renovated Victorian mansion, this YHA venue is more country house hotel than budget hostel in feel. Sure, it's cheap, and has spacious dormitories with shared bathrooms as well as private rooms with en-suite facilities. But its location, in the heart of the rolling hills of the Peak District National Park, the beautiful gardens and its stately vintage interiors pack more of a wow factor than many a five-star hotel – and at a fraction of the price. Above all it's a great base for anyone, but especially for families to explore the best of the Peak District: Castleon is one of the area's most appealing villages, and there are caves, castles, walks and cycle routes to explore all within easy walking distance. Climbers can also enjoy climbing and bouldering on the grit-stone routes nearby. Inside, the hostel is open 24 hours, and serves breakfast, lunch and dinner in two restaurants (and has an outside terrace too), there is a licensed bar and a sumptuous lounge that feels more like a gentlemen's club – plus of course self-caterers can use the well-equipped hostel kitchen. Really there's no better way to see the Peak District on any kind of budget.
