YHA Patterdale has always been one of the YHA's best located hostels, but it has recently had a stylish makeover, and boasts a brand-new retro-cum-modern look that is a practical as well as an aesthetic success. With 85 beds spread over 14 rooms, and a mix of dorms and private rooms, it's a large-ish hostel, but it's got an identity all of its own, with wonderful views from most of its rooms, spacious living and dining areas, a self-catering kitchen and a licensed bar – plus non-hostellers can enjoy a spot of camping in a field while still using all the hostel's facilities. The location is splendid, with the peak of Helvellyn on your doorstep for rock-climbers and more hiking routes than you can shake a stick at, while Ullswater Steamers are less than a mile away if you're after gentler pursuits. There are not many places more perfectly situated for soaking up the peace, beauty and grandeur of the Lake District.
