Best budget digs in Keswick are at the refurbished riverside hostel, which sees a lot of backpacker and hiker traffic but is also a useful base for families looking to save money on accommodation (rooms sleep up to 6, and those up in the eaves are a bit quieter and have views down onto the river). In-the-know couples should book early for the one room in the entire hostel that has a double bed (it’s got a single bunk above, so is also cosy for three). There's also a river-view bistro serving big breakfasts or pizzas and other meals for dinner. You can be out the door and up a proper mountain within half an hour – Skiddaw is the local 3000-foot peak to bag – while the municipal park lies just across the river from the hostel. Or walk the few minutes into Keswick for cagoule shopping and cappuccino drinking in the northern Lakes’ nicest town.
