  • Quirky & Unique
Your choice of intriguing glamping options, spread throughout the grounds of a beautiful country estate

Walcot Hall is a fabulous country estate, perfectly placed for exploring the beautiful Shropshire Hills, and a glorious place to stay in its own right, with a Georgian house at its heart, and, in addition to a number of comfy self-catering cottages and apartments, no fewer than ten different glamping hideouts spread around the 30-acre site, most of them situated in Walcot Hall's very own Arboretum and providing a true sense of woodland seclusion.

They have a wide range of options, – five yurts, a couple of gypsy caravans and romantic shepherd's huts, two 'showman's' caravans, even a converted fire truck. Some of these have their own facilities, the yurts share a converted henhouse loo, others use a 'long-drop' earth toilet in the woods; there is a lovely wooden hut/cabin for the shower in the arboretum. All are exquisitely fitted out in a rustic but luxury style with huge beds. Whether you chose the indulgence of the cottages or the excitement of glamping, guests are welcome to all the privileges of a night at Walcot Hall. The village pub – the Powis Arms – is owned and run by the Hall and serves good food (and also has camping pitches during the summer). In the grounds there are a couple of fishing lakes, a smaller lake with rowing boats to dabble around in and a nearby stables that can take you out for a hack on the local bridleways. Walkers are spoilt for choice but you might like to try the scenic three-mile route to Bishops Castle, a thoroughly welcoming little market town where there are shops, good pubs and a couple of great places to eat, including the restaurant at the excellent Castle Hotel. In the other direction, The Kangaroo Inn in Aston-on-Clun is a proper locals joint serving good food – one of our favourite pubs hereabouts.

Disappointing

We had a terrible stay in the Gold Rush Yurt. The owners had organised a 21st birthday party for their son with ridiculously loud music blaring out until 7am in the morning. Absolutely no consideration for their guests, they boasted that they had complaints from the village for a party last year and joked about another couple who had to abandon their accommodation at 2am in the morning as they discover a hornet's nest inside. The accommodation should not be available for booking if they have a big event on. Disappointing.
