Woodman's Huts

UK England North West England Cumbria

Woodman's Huts, Lanes End, Haverthwaite, Cumbria, LA12 8AB

Beautiful handmade shepherd's huts in the heart of the South Lakes.

In the small village of Haverthwaite, where steam trains whistle to a halt outside a quaint old station, Woodman's Huts is a glamping site with a quintessentially English setting. Ensconced in a private woodland enclave in the South Lakes, the site is made up of just two wooden shepherd’s huts, insulated with sheep’s wool and furnished inside to a seriously comfortable standard. Rough and ready camping this is not – they even have underfloor heating!

Inside, the shepherd's huts are as ergonomic as you could ask for. One sleeps two, the other four (in a double bed with bespoke built bunks), and each have their own en-suite luxury bathroom with a powerful shower, sink and toilet and a few toiletries provided. Together they make for an exclusive stay for small groups, or you can book just one, socialising with your neighbours in the communal ‘Arctic Hut’ – a hexagonal, pine lodge with an indoor BBQ and fire pit in its centre.

For all its glamping supremacy, though, it's the location that really makes this place a cracker. Through gaps in the trees, views south reveal the Holker Valley and across to 16th century Bigland Hall while, closer to home, fledgling birds enliven the surrounding trees. The postcard panorama of Lake Windermere is just a few minutes away in the car, or you can set off into the national park right from the sites doorstep, with several excellent footpaths nearby. Walking is, after all, the best way to bring out your inner shepherd.

The 2 berth hut and the 4 berth hut can be let individually or as a group. Glamping only, so no tents, campervans, caravans, pets.

The local area

It's a 15 minute walk to Haverthwaite Railway Station (015395 31594) where you can hop on a steam train and chug your way to Lakeside (via Newby Bridge) and then, if you want, continue the journey by water on one of the Steamers of Windermere Lake Cruises (015394 43360). The cruises cover the entire lake (the longest in England) from top to bottom. Alternatively Windermere is just 5 minutes in the car. The ancient village of Cartmel is famous for the 12th Century Cartmel Priory, and is well worth a visit. The village also houses a variety of interesting shops and traditional pubs around its main square and is home of the world famous 'Cartmel Sticky Toffee Pudding!' The campsite is also conveniently located 15 minutes from Grizedale Forest (03000 674495), with miles of good cycling, walking and hiking trails. Right outside the huts there is also a series of excellent trails, known as Haverthwaite heights. This allows you a quick ascent to the beautiful views of Morecambe Bay (01524 582808) or in the other direction, the charming Rusland Valley and Coniston old man.

Best local places to eat and drink

Plenty of good pubs within a few miles – though the kitchen in the huts means you may just want to stay in! After a day in the lakes you can enjoy a hearty meal at the The White Hart (01229 861229) in Bouth, which also offers beautiful woodland views. The pubs horseshoe-shaped bar boasts six well kept cask conditioned real ales and three changing guest beers from around the UK. Also in Bouth, Old Hall Farm (01229 861993) has a lovely tea room offer coffees, cakes, lunches and their famous cream tea. The Angler's Arms (015395 31216) serves decent pub grub and a fantastic selection of ales. The nearest town (6 miles away) is charming Ulverston, with beautiful cobbled streets and a market twice a week. There is also supermarket and plenty of small independent eateries and shops.
