Woodman's Huts

UK England North West England Cumbria Ulverston

  • Shepherds Huts & Cabin
  • Walkers Paradise
Beautiful handmade shepherd's huts in the heart of the South Lakes.

In the small village of Haverthwaite, where steam trains whistle to a halt outside a quaint old station, Woodman's Huts is a glamping site with a quintessentially English setting. Ensconced in a private woodland enclave in the South Lakes, the site is made up of two wooden shepherd’s huts, insulated with sheep’s wool and furnished inside to a seriously comfortable standard and a Woodman’s Cabin with its Japanese themed garden, water feature and private decking. Rough and ready camping this is not – they even have underfloor heating!

Inside, the shepherd's huts are beautifully planned, exceptionally cosy spaces. One sleeps two, the other four (in a double bed with bespoke built bunks), and each have their own en-suite luxury bathroom with a powerful shower, sink and toilet and a few toiletries provided. The two berth hut also includes its own separate dining area and soft seating in the dining area with bespoke furnishings. You can book just the one hut of course, but many people book the site exclusively,  socialising with friends and family in the communal ‘Arctic Hut’ – a hexagonal, pine lodge with an indoor BBQ and fire pit in its centre. Or, if you want to keep yourselves to yourselves, each shepherds hut has its own private garden furniture and seating area too.

For all its glamping supremacy, though, it's the location that really makes this place a cracker. Through gaps in the trees, views south reveal the Holker Valley and across to 16th century Bigland Hall while, closer to home, fledgling birds enliven the surrounding trees. The postcard panorama of Lake Windermere is just a few minutes away in the car, or you can set off into the national park right from the sites doorstep, with several excellent footpaths nearby. Walking is, after all, the best way to bring out your inner shepherd.
