Penmarlam Caravan & Camping Park

UK England South West England Cornwall Fowey

Penmarlam Caravan & Camping Park, Bodinnick, Fowey, Cornwall PL23 1LZ
A small and immaculately kept campsite.

A small and immaculately kept campsite, across the estuary from Fowey (but easy to reach by ferry), the big attraction at Penmarlam is its boat-launching slipway. The site facilities are excellent, including a well-stocked licenced shop selling all you might need, internet and wi-fi, and disabled facilities. It can get busy in high season, but the pitches are a decent size and all have electric hook-ups. If you’re bringing (or hiring) a boat or canoe and need an affordable place to stay this is definitely a good option.

Our favourite spot

Everyone’s welcome! Tents, caravans, campervans, sailors, dogs and cats – yes.

The local area

The charming village of Bodinnick (on the east bank of the River Fowey) is at the start of the famous Hall Walk. Beloved by walkers, this tiny village is surrounded by rolling countryside and farmland. Many of the nearby farms date back to Doomsday records of 1086, and the majority of the landscape has changed little since. A short drive away is the world famous Eden Project (01726 811911). Each football-like Biome takes visitors into a different region of the world; trek through a humid South American rainforest, or experience the dry deserts of Northern Africa. There’s plenty going on in the Outdoor Biome too, with 13 hectares of garden containing almost 2,000 plant species. For one week each August the usually tranquil town of Fowey (a short ferry ride across the river) attracts some 2,500 visiting yachts who flock there for the Fowey Royal Regatta, one of Britain’s premier sailing events. It is also a fun-filled week for all the family, sailors and landlubbers alike.

Best local places to eat and drink

Away from the onsite shop there are plenty of eating options nearby, including: Sam’s (01726 832273), a cool 60’s style joint serving fish and famous burgers; The Old Quay House (01726 833302) with its award-winning restaurant and The Lifebuoy Café (07715075869) who’s affable staff and quirky, comfortable surroundings ensure a visit is a revitalising and indulgent experience. If you're feeling a wee bit flush, treat yourself to the gourmet six-course tasting menu at Langmans (01579 384933) in Callington, a traditional market town.
