  • Contemporary Country Pub
This comfortable Hampshire pub with rooms is a perfect short break from London and gives the chance to spend time on the huge estate of the Duke of Wellington.

Part of the Grosvenor Pubs group, which has several properties in Hampshire and Surrey, the Wellington Arms occupies a splendid location on the vast Wellington estate a few miles north of Basingstoke. It's a comfortable and rather grand sort of place, apart from the prices, which are extremely moderate whether you're just staying overnight in one of its comfy guest rooms or just stopping by for lunch. You also have all the benefits of the Duke of Wellington's old stamping-ground on your doorstep, with its country park, children's farm and playground and lots of opportunities for walking, cycling and horseriding.

A family-friendly pub at heart, the Wellington Arms is a large 18th-century building that has a spacious and casual bar and restaurant serving really good food along with 25 beautiful en-suite guest bedrooms. Appropriately, there's a country feel throughout, with lots of references to hunting, shooting and fishing, as well as the Iron Duke himself, who lived some of the time in nearby Strafield Saye House but in reality spent most of his time in London. There's a pubby feel for drinkers around the bar, an elegant, slightly more formal restaurant area and a separate wedding venue next door. The food is upmarket pub fare for the most part, with high quality classics – fish and chips, burgers, cottage pie and steaks – and a couple of veggie dishes, daily specials and a variety of gluten-free options. Breakfast, included in overnight rates, is a generous full English, with other hot options available.

The rooms are stylish, comfortable and mostly quite spacious – six in the main house, and a further 19 in a rear extension. Furnished in cool greys and greens, they all come with king- or super-king-sized bed, plus tea- and coffee-making facilities (including Nespresso machines). Four rooms have baths, the rest good rainfall showers and bathrooms come with ESPA toiletries.

It's a terrific place to stay if you want a convenient short break in the country from London – easy to reach and with plenty to do nearby, not least the delights of the estate itself, where, as well as the country park and grounds, you can visit the Duke of Wellington's original residence at Stratfield Saye House, which is still home to the Wellington dynasty. And in case the Duke's estate isn't grand enough for you or you fancy a bit of Downton Abbey action, Highclere Castle is a short drive away, plus Jane Austen's House in Alton is easily reachable by car 20 minutes to the south.

Nearby

Stratfield Turgis is a small hamlet offering easy access to Reading and Basingstoke. There's plenty to see and do, however particular favourites, if you have time, would be to plan a visit to West Green House & Gardens, especially if they've an open-air concert taking place in the summer months, or perhaps, you'd prefer a day of relaxation at Thame Lido followed by a trip to Stanlake Park Wine Estate for a spot of wine quaffing.

If you want to travel further afield or have a few days to explore the local area, then consider a tour of Highclere Castle (for the die-hard Downton Abbey fans) or a visit of Windsor Castle as definite options. Hop on a train and you can be in central London in less than an hour to enjoy the vast galleries and tourist attractions right on your doorstep or, if the sun is shining, head to the coast for a dip in the sea and, of course, to taste the freshest fish and chips. Other ideas include Lego Land, Paulton's Park (home to Peppa Pig World) and Lapland UK (Nov-Dec only). Other ideas include Go Ape, I-Fly, shopping in both Reading and Basingstoke, the theatre and so much more.

For young families, in addition to the above, there's also days out to enjoy at Wellington Country Park, Buckleberry Farm Deer & Safari Park, feeding the ducks at California Country Park and swimming at Coral Reef.

Food & Drink

Apart from our own delicious pub restaurant, we love the food at Wellington Farm Shop and Cafe just down the road; so this is definitely worth a visit (we dare you to leave empty handed, their shop is fabulous!). If you're looking for something a bit alternative, the nearby village of Hartley Wintney offer some loving food options including a quality Italian restaurant, Mamma Mia, or for a good curry we'd recommend The Taj or The Monsoon. If you're looking to treat yourself to more of a fine dining experience, we would highly recommend the hotel restaurant's at Heckfield Place and Four Seasons Hotel Hampshire, plus, for Michelin-starred dining there is L'Ortolan, The Waterside Inn, The Fat Duck (plus many more in the county).

The Owner Says

The Wellington Arms Hotel and pub sits on The Duke of Wellington's estate. The estate was originally purchased in 1817 by the 1st Duke of Wellington following his victorious efforts during the Battle of Waterloo. Two centuries later, the 9th Duke of Wellington and his family have created a wealth of new businesses and business ventures to be enjoyed by the public across its estate.

Located in the small and quintessentially English hamlet of Stratfield Turgis, which is located on the main A33 between Reading and Basingstoke, the area is home to a number of beautiful natural features, most prominent is the River Loddon which meanders it's way through the parish, allowing for some wonderful walks alongside trout-filled streams and through ancient woodland.

The hotel and pub is home to 25 beautiful en-suite bedrooms, each designed with a modern, comforting style alongside, of course, the benefits of a top-notch bar, restaurant and pub garden to enjoy downstairs. The hotel also features stunning event facilities to host private and corporate events.

The hamlet of Stratfield Turgis remains mainly residential, and the pub is surrounded by fields (and the A33), however nearby neighbours include West Green Gardens (for garden visits and outdoor live musical and opera events) and the Duke's own family businesses including Wellington Farm Shop, Wellington Riding and Wellington Country Park. A much wider variety of shopping and restaurants are available in nearby villages and towns, including Hartley Wintney, Basingstoke and Reading.
