There's nothing like summer in Britain if the sun is shining. In fact, having a good summer in London seems to often be determined by just a handful of factors: weather, the number of barbecues you’re invited to, weather again, the number of times you get away with wearing flip flops to the office, and, er, the weather. But perhaps the most telling sign of a good summer, and in parrticular a good bank holiday weekend, is finding that ultimate urban beer garden. Apparently kicking back in the sunshine – knocking back Pimm’s like it’s 1969 – seems to be what us Brits do best. Indeed, whether you’re after a dainty fairy-lit patio or a moonlit rooftop terrace – London will provide. So without further ado, here’s my pick of must-sit-in-all-day beer gardens across the capital.
A Shoreditch legend, and certainly deserved of it’s regal title, the graffiti cladded, quirky, Queen of Hoxton boasts one of the best rooftop beer gardens around.
You won’t find many gastro pubs in well-to-do Hampstead with character like this. At night, the place transforms into party central with live music and big drinkers. It’s a good job the giant beer garden can handle it.
With an encompassment like Victoria Park, it’s easy to see why the beer garden at the Britannia is a South hackney favourite. Throw in the deck chairs and barbecues and you might just forget you’re in London altogether.
Islington/ Stoke Newington, N1
Deep in the award-guzzling Islington bar scene is a beer garden more Parisian than public house. Dainty garden furniture, mouth-watering seasonal food and homemade sloe gin
If a stress-free beer garden is what you’re after, then the bamboo bedecked, chill out zone of the Avalon will definitely impress.
Brick Lane, E1
You can’t do a round up of London beer gardens without Vibe Bar in the mix. With its graffitied walls, monstrous outdoor garden and funky events, it’s no wonder it’s popular.
Overlooking the Regent’s Canal, Lockside Lounge’s lengthy roof terrace is the perfect place to escape the flurry of Camden’s mania.
