Campsites near London

All work and no play can leave a Londoner rather burnt out.  So if you're one of them, we suggest you throw a little caution to the wind, pack your bags and head down to one of these effortlessly cool campsites which, conveniently enough, happen to be roughly an hour away from the capital.

The Secret Campsite

Probably one of the worst kept secrets in Britain, but with a campsite this good, it's impossible to not tell anyone about it.  Choose from 15 spacious tent pitches hidden in a private wildflower meadow; or treat yourself to one of their three 'secret structures'.

Orchard Campsite

A great, family-friendly site, set among meadows and woodland that stretch down to the banks of the Deben river. It has 60 pitches and unusually allows campfires.  You can also choose between pre-erected tents and gypsy caravans in the trees, and there’s virtually free wifi that works across much of the site.

Housedean Campsite

In an area boasting some of rural England's loveliest scenery (and no shortage of wonderful campsites), this 900 acre family-run farm and campsite is a real gem.  It's suitable for camping novices and experts alike; plus the nearby South Downs Way provides some great walking and cycling routes.

Hawthbush Farm

This is effortless back-to-basics camping at its best – campfires, rolling about in fields and general fun all round.  The working 140-acre organic farm is in the very heart of East Sussex, so prepare to be dazzled by an endless expanse of golden fields and unspoilt wildflower meadows.

Hurley Lock

If you want to commune with old father Thames, nothing beats camping on the riverbank. A handful of locks offer basic camping facilities for the summer season, with access generally by boat or foot only. But the best of the lot is at Hurley, where the river is split by a dozen small islands.

Livingstone Lodge

Who knew you could find South African bush territory just an hour away from London?  Alright, you cant.  But this is glamping – safari style.   You get to sleep in an authentic safari tent with a comfy bed, with your own private verandah, fluffy towels, electric lights, wi-fi and a slap-up dinner and breakfast.
