Wake up surrounded by nature at this unique and very comfortable Kent B&B

Tucked away in a remote corner of Kent, it would be fair to call Elmley Nature Reserve one of southern England's hidden gems, a seemingly endless expanse of sky and water that's home to reeds and tidal streams, wildfowl and waders, and feels almost entirely untouched by human hand. It's actually the only farm-owned and managed National Nature Reserve in the UK, run by Georgina and Gareth Fulton, making it doubly special that you can actually stay overnight in this wonderful place, either glamping in a mixture of shepherds huts and bell tents, or staying in one of two impressive properties.

One of these – Elmley Cottage – sleeps up to 10 people on a self-catering basis, while the other – 18th-century Kingshill Farmhouse – is a rather special five-bedroom B&B. Opened just a couple of years following an extensive restoration, the farmhouse has featured in all sorts of design and travel magazines and is a unique and unforgettable place to stay, retaining a rustic vibe while feeling thoroughly contemporary. There's a cosy yet grand dual-aspect sitting room that's a perfect place to slouch, and a library providing a quiet space for reading and a cosy snug where the wood-burner is lit every evening.

Wherever in the house you may be, you are acutely aware of the glorious view over the nature reserve outside, which makes its presence felt in every room, but most of all in the modern kitchen, where floor-to-ceiling glass doors open out onto a patio with a fire pit and furniture for al fresco dinners and late-night musing – indeed this area becomes an informal bar from early evening on, serving a selection of drinks and bar snacks.

Upstairs, the house's five bedrooms all have their own bathrooms, super-king-size beds and rainfall showers while three also have rolltop baths as well, and they all come with robes and Bramley toiletries. The dual-aspect Elmley Room has a double shower, the stylish Yellow Room has a super-spacious bathroom overlooking the reserve, while the top floor is occupied by the appropriately named Lookout suite, which has 2 beamed bedrooms, one with a super-king-size bed, the other with twin daybeds, and its own bathroom.

Both breakfast and dinner are served in the dining room and kitchen, and you could spend days on end here very happily if the weather is bad, or frankly even if it is not. However, it would be a shame not to take advantage of everything else the location has to offer –  whether it's spotting wading birds from one of the hides or going on one of the regular wildlife tours of the reserve – Elmley is home to one of England's largest lapwing populations plus you're likely to spot curlews, short-eared owls, herons and much more.  Alternatively, simply gaze out of the window across the marshes, or just drift off to sleep at sundown as the owls hoot softly across the marshes. Beyond the reserve, you can explore Sheppey, visit the beach at Minster, both a short drive away, or cross the river to pick up the Saxon Shore Way.

Open all year.
