Listed in all the guidebooks and regularly voted one of Britain's best B&Bs, 7Longport not only enjoys a great position, very handy for the centre of Canterbury but tucked away in a peaceful location opposite the ruins of St Augustine's Abbey, but it's also extremely comfortable, with accommodation in a separate one-bedroom cottage and two three-bedroom terraced cottages that are ideal for self-catering. The cottage dates from the 15th century and was formerly a “backhouse”, where much of the work of the household was carried on. This is one of the few that survive and and is comfortable as you could wish for, decorated and furnished in a tasteful, contemporary style using a basic, white, cream and black colour palette and well-chosen, stylish furniture. There's a cosy wood-buning stove downstairs, a well-equipped kitchen, a wetroom with posh toiletries and all the tech you need – wifi, DVD player, flatscreen TV. Breakfast is worth staying for in itself, served in the main building and all locally sourced (although you can opt for a continental breakfast served in the cottage); but they really nail it with the service, which is as warm a welcome and as good an introduction to Canterbury as you could wish for. And if you fancy self-catering instead, the two properties on Love Lane are just the other side of the garden wall, and similarly well-equipped.
