Cathedral Gate Hotel

UK England South East England Kent Canterbury

Simple but effective are the words that ring true here. A rambling medieval building with a stunning, central location on Buttermarket, right next to the Cathedral. A couple of the rooms have amazing cathedral views; others are more basic, with shared bathrooms. Thanks to the ancient building, the whole place is a bit higgledy-piggledy, with sloping floors and low doorways. Slightly rundown in places but full of atmosphere, this is a hotel that can't fail but win you over with its aged but traditional charm. There's a small reading lounge and continental breakfast is included in the price.

Basic, but cosy

I loved it. It's very old fashioned, and ramshackle, and basic, but clean and friendly and in a brilliant position. And for solo travellers it is a real bargain.
