This award-winning -winning boutique B&B is an ideal base for exploring the Peak District.

Situated in the pretty Derbyshire village of Castleton, deep in the heart of the Peak District, Speedwell House offers a variety of accommodation. Owners Mark and Hilary have a self-catering Barn and Stable which each provides self-catering dog-friendly accommodation for 2 people. But they also run the beautiful, award-winning Speedwell House boutique B&B next door, which has two extremely comfortable guest bedrooms who want to be a little bit more pampered while still being perfectly placed for exploring  the Peak District National Park – which stretches out tantalisingly in all directions.

The B&B's two rooms each have high-quality beds and bedding with lots of pillows, wall-mounted TVs with Freeview, wifi and tea-and coffee-making facilities – plus en-suite bathrooms with showers and complimentary toiletries. One bedroom is decorated, appropriately enough, in 'speedwell blue', while the other is more neutral. Throughout, the look and feel is tasteful and original, with bespoke furniture made by local craftsmen, local art and the odd antique chair or dresser.

You're offered a drink on arrival and a breakfasts each morning that is well worth waking up for, featuring a generous Full English as well as lots of other options – just the thing for a day out enjoying what is by any standards a spectacular location. They have a large garden, with newly planted trees and a small orchard, where you can enjoy views of Peveril Castle with a glass of wine each evening. Castleton itself is a lovely village, and well worth exploring in its own right; and there are invigorating walks in all directions – everything from a circular walks around the village taking in the ruins of the castle to trips further afield to Mam Tor, Edale and the Hope Valley. The Derbyshire towns of Buxton and Bakewell are a short drive away, and  you couldn't be better looked after, with Mark and Hilary always on hand with tips on the best walks and pubs to help you make the most of your stay.

The Owner Says

We bought lovely Speedwell House in November 2014 and after a full refurbishment we opened the B&B in June 2016. It was a lifestyle choice and we absolutely love what we are doing. Over this time we have received a 2018 and 2019 Certificate of Excellence and have just been awarded a 2020 Good Hotel Award, one of only 2 in the Peak District. We are just one minute walk from the 6 pubs, restaurant and many tea rooms in Castleton village and to the north of the house is the Dark Peaks and to the south the limestone of the White Peaks all providing dramatic and beautiful scenery and a most relaxing setting.

''Just came back from a short break to the Peak District and had an wonderful stay at the Speedwell House-Castleton. An amazing property full of character and comfort, with beautiful B&B Bedrooms. The owners Hilary & Mark where charming, so welcoming, really hospitable and passionate about what they do! Serving up an amazing spread for Breakfast and even providing cream tea!! Would definately recommend this property to others and we plan to go back again in the Summer!''
''We have just enjoyed our second stay with Hilary and Mark which we thoroughly enjoyed. You wouldn't find a more friendly, helpful couple - they really make your stay such a treat - just like visiting family, with a lovely roaring fire and cream tea to welcome you after a cold day's travelling. Both have a great sense of humour too, and are very knowledgeable about the area. The room at the b and b was so comfortable, with everything you could wish to have for an enjoyable stay. We both had a full English breakfast each morning and wow! Mark and Hilary certainly know what they're doing in the kitchen! We were drooling all the way home just thinking about it!! We'd thoroughly recommend a stay at Speedwell House, and are already looking forward to our next visit there.''

Our favourite room

We only have 2 B&B rooms, both with lovely views of Peveril Castle, comfortable beds, Freeview TV, WiFi, en suite shower rooms. There is a fridge on the landing with fresh milk for your teas and coffees and lovely cold Derbyshire water, and maybe even your bottle of wine or bubbly! Both rooms are relaxing, warm and cosy - we don't have a favourite!

The local area

There’s no wonder that idyllic Castleton is such a popular place for visitors and locals alike. The awe-inspiring ‘Shivering Mountain’ of Mam Tor is right on the doorstep, making it the ideal base for hikers. For adventurers of all ages the imposing ruins of Peveril Castle are great to explore, as are the four stunning show caverns, all within walking distance of Speedwell House.  Castleton village boasts not one, but six great country pubs, as well as a wide range of shops, cafes and restaurants.

Best local places to eat and drink

The 1530 restaurant is fabulous with many special dishes. The 6 pubs are all great, our favourite is the George with a great welcome, cosy fires and lovely home cooked food

Why stay with us?

Relax and Enjoy is our aim. Once parked up you can forget the car and just enjoy walks in to the hills direct from the house. In the summer many guests enjoy sitting out in our meadow at the rear of the house with a glass of wine and some local cheeses after a great day out. In the winter a cosy pub fire makes a relaxing spot.
