Yewfield

UK England North West England Cumbria Hawkshead

  • Guest Rooms & 7 Apartments

The owners of Zeffirellis and Fellinis vegetarian restaurants in Ambleside also offer guest rooms in their desirable Victorian Gothic mansion, a couple of miles outside Hawkshead and set in its own mature gardens, woodland and grounds. It’s an extremely quiet, secluded spot, with some lovely rooms, while the house decor reflects the owners’ worldwide travels. Gentle walks lead straight from the door (they have their own nature trail, wildflower meadows and ponds) and there’s a big veggie buffet breakfast to set you up for the day.

Peaceful and friendly

This is a really friendly little place in a converted victorian country house, and the breakfasts are as advertised, with all sorts of stuff on offer in the buffet. There is nothing very close nearby, so don't plan on walking to eat out though, as even Hawkshead is a difficult walk late at night. Tarn Hows is just over the hill, and there are lots of really great daytime walks around this place - it's really well-situated in the middle of the lakes, and not far from Coniston, Grasmere or Windermere. The road across to Grasmere, past the Drunken Duck, through Elterwater, and over the High Close, is particularly nice to cycle, and you can stop at the Drunken Duck for something to eat on the way (definitely don't miss that pub if you're in the lakes). Our only problem was that Hawkshead Hill is really steep and the roads are not friendly for bikes, so cyclists beware! If you come in a car this isn't a problem, but otherwise it can be hard to get out and about if you want to visit other villages.

Quiet luxury haven with walks from the door

Despite being slap bang in the middle of tourist territory, Yewfield is set in its own large grounds atop a hill, so feels like it's in the middle of nowhere. Luxury accommodation is either in the house or in attached self-catering units. Large lounge with comfy sofas and real fire in the winter. Delicious cooked vegetarian breakfast. Wander down the hill for dinner, or better still, drive to one of their two veggie restaurants nearby. Lovely walks from the door. Highly recommended.
