Elan Valley is a collection of reservoirs in the heart of Mid Wales Cambrian Mountains. It offers great walking and wheelchair paths, suitable for all. Small cafe / info centre there is very good. Adventurous ones can walk up the mountains nearby. As for looks its better than the lakes!

Elan Valley: like the lakes without the people ★★★★★

Elanydd to give it it's poet Welsh nane is staggeringly wild and beautiful! Set within the glorious Cambrian Mountains(less well known than the Brecon Beacons but in my opinion even more beautiful) it is known as the Green Desert of Wales due to its lack of population and miles and miles of totally unspoiled countryside. More wildlife than you can shake a stick at, well maintained but underused footpaths and some of the best mountain and motorbiking roads in the world, it is wild Britain at its absolute best! I'm a convert, brought up in Northumberland with countless holidays in the Cumbrian Lake District (as well as a brother who lives in the Lakeland National Park) I can say hand on heart that the Elan Valley is like the Lake District but without the crowds. You can find places to eat without having to wait even at the height of the season and it boasts the best tea shop I have ever been to (Penbont House) which also offers B&B. There are superb camping sites, Tipi Glamping and caravan parks where you can hire a luxury static by the River Wye for £250 a week in high season! I doubt there's anywhere in Cumbria to beat that!(check out cool camping's review). Added to that there are the quirky antique shops and the many pubs of Rhayader where walking boots are welcome and you can eat great food by a roaring log fire. The visitors centre is really nice with a decent cafe and gift shop plus brilliant displays including a short film by the BBC's gorgeous Yolo Williams. They also organise masses of guided walks and free activities. I just love the Elan Valley!

Better than the Lakes? ★★★★★

It's nice but not that nice... Best thing about it is the great mountain biking and the chance to really get away from it all
