Think of your ideal gastropub – this is it!

The Felin Fach Griffin Restaurant

Felin Fach Brecon Powys LD3 0UB 01874 620 111

We say

In this part of Wales you need a place to rest after a hard day's walking and the Felin Fach Griffin, situated on the edge of the Brecon Beacons National Park – and owned by the same folk who run the very comfy Gurnard's Head near Zennor and the Old Coastguard in Mousehole – more than fits the bill. A renowned local gastropub with the same attitude to food as its sister businesses, it's a relaxed no-standing-on-ceremony sort of place that serves simple, high-quality yet hearty grub using local ingredients that draws hungry yet discerning diners from miles around. It's a proper pub, and as such is a fine place just to drink, with well-priced, well-kept local ales, comfy seats for local drinkers and a roaring fire in winter – and, like any decent pub,  dogs, are more than welcome. But the food is the thing here, and is justly renowned. It's hard to say exactly what you will eat as the menus change so often, but what they call the supper menu is admirably short and to the point, with half a dozen starters and main courses incorporating local game and Welsh beef and lamb, fish from Cornwall and produce from their own kitchen garden; they also do a lovely set lunch menu during the week as well as award-winning roasts on Sunday, accompanied by live music every other weekend. It might be that you can't bring yourself to leave, and we wouldn't blame you – in which case you'll be pleased to know they have several characterful rooms upstairs.
