Lake of Mentieth Hotel

Port of Menteith Perthshire FK8 3RA 01877 385 258

We say

It may be only half an hour from Glasgow and an hour from Edinburgh, but the Lake of Mentieth Hotel feels far more remote. One of Central Scotland’s most romantic escapes nestles by the picture postcard Lake of Mentieth, one of the country’s few actual ‘lakes’. This old whitewashed dame enjoys sweeping views out across the water to a surrounding fold of hills and mountains with ducks, herons and ospreys all regularly spotted from their waterfront garden. With dynamic Americaphile Ian Fleming at the helm, the vibe is a sort of New England meets New Scotland and it works: the superb whisky bar is a highlight, offering a range of rare drams, and is the only place in the UK to stock the Glengoyne 40-year-old (£450 for the first dram in the bottle, £220 thereafter). You’ll be glad to know that you can often get a room at this gorgeous wee retreat for a lot less. Make sure to book one with a lake view.
