There's plenty of tartan tat on the Royal Mile, diminishing the genuine craft and heritage that exists in kiltmaking. Geoffrey (Tailor) is one place doing it properly, though they, like others, do plenty of business renting out kilts and the traditional accompanying jackets, socks and sporrans for weddings and other dressing-up occasions. For a neat contemporary take on what can be a po-faced industry, its sister shop, 21st-Century Kilts (www.21stcenturykilts.com), offers outfits in tweed, pinstripe, camouflage – in fact, anything but tartan.
