Sleek, contemporary, respected and popular, David Bann's vegetarian restaurant has well and truly buried the open-toed sandal image of meat-free eating. Dishes such as smoked mushroom and basil tortellini with watercress soup, or a soufflé of blue cheese, beetroot and apple, are sophisticated, well-presented and full of taste; delivered with ease and aplomb by a laid-back team. And not a lentil in sight.
David Bann is a rare breed of restaurant that attracts punters for its good food, rather than the fact it’s vegetarian. Nicely midway between scruffy and oppressively opulent, it’s a place where you won’t feel out of place if you posh up a bit; nor will you feel embarrassed dining in your (smart) jeans. I’ve been vegetarian for over 30 years and actively seek out killer places: this is one of them. I can bring my non-veggie friends here without any shame. The only pity is that it’s so far away from my home. Lucky Edinburgh.
