You know what you’re getting with a Malmaison, where hip and cool are very definitely part of the deal. Glasgow’s, though, ramps it right up, with a stunning city-centre location inside a former Greek Orthodox church – just off Blythswood Square, between Glasgow Central train station and Sauchiehall Street, you’re right in the thick of things from the minute you arrive. Parking is the only pain, though that’s Glasgow for you – paid on-street by the hotel, or the nearest car park is a ten-minute walk away.

Internal style is contemporary-pop-art and in-your-face – think boutique, bright and colourful – and if you can run to the club and deluxe rooms or suites, that would be the way to go for an unforgettable city break. But all the 72 rooms are super-slinky, with power-showers and soft beds, big flat screens, signature toiletries and 24-hour room service. The brasserie in the extraordinary, vaulted basement is the usual snappy, good-value, Malmaison experience – and the bar has an on-trend, cocktail-lounge feel that makes it a destination city-centre haunt in its own right.
