This cosy family-run three star sits way out west in the romantic wilds of Argyll, enjoying a vista alive with a sprinkling of islands that stretches off across the expanse of the Atlantic Ocean. The rooms in the characterful main hotel are our pick, with some of the large bedrooms having the best vistas from their large bay windows. Downstairs a cosy bar, lounge and restaurant await, while just outside you can amble about the grounds. A trio of Highland cows make for great photos and a wee path leads down to their boathouse, where the intrepid can go for a swim in summer. There is a kids' playground too. The big attraction next door is Arduaine Gardens, one of Argyll’s finest gardens, with tickets available from the hotel reception.
