Sited in the heart of serious mountain-bike country, in northern Swaledale, the Dales Bike Centre has everything you need for a great day on the trails followed by a decent night's sleep at budget prices. There's bike rental, sales, repairs, and guide-led tours from the premises, while the two converted barns that make up the business also have some neat-as-a-pin bunk rooms above – three twin and two four-person rooms sharing spotless bathroom facilities. They expect people to arrive filthy – whether mountain-bikers or Coast-to-Coast hikers – and there are good bike-wash, laundry and drying facilities. A simple breakfast is included (scrambled egg, bacon sandwiches, croissants), served in the downstairs café – overnight guests get a key to this, so you can come and help yourself to honesty-box homemade cake and free wifi. The nearest pub is just a few minutes' walk away in Grinton, or under ten minutes in the other direction is Reeth, which has another three or four pubs and the excellent Reeth Bakery.
