Tudor House

Bell Busk Malham North Yorkshire BD23 4DT 01729 830 301

We say

If we say your room with a view at Tudor House is of the railway line, you may not be overly impressed. But when the railway line is the Settle–Carlisle route, and your room is inside what was once a train station, you begin to see why we love Tudor House. The old station at Bell Busk – just four miles from Malham – closed in 1959, and Tudor House has been a B&B since the 1970s, offering a genuinely unique experience as the regular service trains and special steam excursions whoosh right past several times a day. There's the biggest reminder of the old days in the lounge and terrace, which combines parts of the former waiting room and platform; the dining room, meanwhile, was once the ticket office (and the ticket window is still there). The present owners think the ground-floor double room, 'Wharfedale' overlooking the tracks, was probably the first-class waiting room, while up a narrow staircase are four more guest rooms, all fitted out in a bright, modern style. 'Wensleydale' has the best bathroom – a full en-suite with bath – and more big views down the curving track, while cleverly appointed 'Orient Express' is modelled on a retro sleeping carriage with its fitted, curtained bunks, brass fittings and wooden barrel ceiling. There's a log-burner, sun-lounge and honesty bar, and an acre of mature gardens outside – now all you need is the Settle–Carlisle timetable to work out the best times for a most unusual holiday snap from the privacy of your own bedroom.
