Austwick near Settle North Yorkshire LA2 8AZ 01524 251 021

We say

The location is really handy – on the road between Settle and Ingleton – and Dalesbridge also goes out of its way to appeal to all budgets, since it's a combined B&B, bunkhouse and campsite set in the grounds of what was once a convalescent hospital. Bed and breakfast is in the main house, where the nurses used to live, with country-pine en-suite doubles and family rooms that look over the grounds and fields. There's an outdoorsy feel, so no one much minds boots and walking gear, and Dalesbridge has good contacts with local activity operators, from caving to mountain-biking. But really active families, bikers and hikers tend to go for the en-suite bunkhouse cabins, set apart from the main house – configured to sleep four or six, they are fairly utilitarian and well-worn but do have all you'll need for a camping-without-a-tent experience (there's a lot more room, and a full kitchen in the 6-bed cabins). Of course, if you've got a tent, then the big field in front is the cheapest space for the night at Dalesbridge – there are toilets, showers and wash-up rooms, and a pub and a shop in the nearby village of Austwick. Ten acres of grounds means there's plenty of room for children to zoom around on foot and bike, but the whole of the western Dales is on your doorstep too.
