Subside is the drinking establishment of choice for the avid hard rock fan in Birmingham. Heavy Metal – and its multitudinous sub-genres – blasts out well into the small hours here (it closes at 6am on weekends), and as you would probably expect, the ambience is distinctly crepuscular, full of dusky corners occupied by punters attired in denim and leather. But it's not just the rockers who make a beeline for Subside: its hours of business make it a regular port of call for the after-clubbing crowd too, so it's always busy, and there's a pool table too to keep everyone entertained. The city's darkest and loudest drinking establishment, by some way, the cacophonous experience is sometimes augmented by the occasional live metal band, while the first Thursday of every month sees the venue go quiet for a movie night that also includes free popcorn.
