A comfy, cosy – and contemporary – country inn that's a convenient home-from-home for both Oxford and the Cotswolds.
Station Road South Leigh Oxfordshire OX29 6XN 01993 656 220
Nestled in the Oxfordshire countryside just a few miles west of Oxford, on the eastern fringes of the Cotswolds, Artist Residence Oxfordshire is the ultimate country inn – with five bedrooms tucked away in the eaves that are just the finale to the excellent food and drink served downstairs in Mr Hanbury's Mason Arms. You can enjoy all the best things about a good country pub here – an open fire, good local ales, armchairs to lounge about in, homemade bar snacks – but they also serve a full menu in Mr Hanbury's dining room that is as simple and beautifully cooked and presented as it is local, seasonal and above all British. However, it's the rooms that really set this place apart, equipped with all the features that make a trip to the country that much more enticing – large, comfy beds, powerful showers and the sort of vintage-tinged but comfortable decor we've come to expect from the quirky Artist Residence group (which has sister properties in London, Brighton and Penzance). The guest rooms all have free wifi, flatscreen Freeview TVs, digital radios, Nespresso coffee machines, and mini-fridges stocked with local goodies – and there are Bramley toiletries in the bathrooms, some of which have standalone rolltop baths. The rooms range in size, from the compact 'Rabbit Hole' through the more spacious Farmhouse Loft rooms (which are dog-friendly) to the lovely Farmhouse Suite, which has a lovely copper bath tub in the room itself, a separate bathroom with shower and an adjoining seating area.
Above all, though, we like the confident, distinctive way it's all put together: very contemporary but with a traditional approach to comfort, service – and, most importantly, food – that will have you coming back for more. Altogether it's one of our favourite places to stay in this part of Oxfordshire, and indeed the Cotswolds in general.
