Norfolk is full of country houses, but few are larger or more magnificent than Houghton all, formerly the home of Britain’s first prime minister, Sir Robert Walpole, and since 1797 the property of the Marquess of Cholmondley, Its considered to be one of the finest Palladian houses in the country, and on the inside boasts furnishings that are contemporary with the house and and the considerable remnants of what was a fine collection of English paintings, including works by Gainsborough and Hogarth. The grounds beyond encompass a five-acre walled garden, a deer park, woodlands criss-crossed with footpaths, a sculpture park and a toy soldier museum with some 20,000 toy soldiers from all era – great for your own little soldiers, who may also enjoy the Hall’s playground and café.
