This gorgeous boutique hotel from the consistently good Firmdale hotel group has a brilliant location on a relatively quiet street in the heart of Covent Garden. The handsome redbrick building (once a hospital) lends itself to classic club styling – thus the wood-panelled walls, oil paintings, roaring fires, comfy sofas – but the vibe is strictly of the moment, with feature wallpapers, flashes of fuchsia and quirky furnishings. This is a luxury experience – all the 60-odd rooms (from standard rooms to vast suites) come with comfy beds, luxe toiletries, wi-fi, iPod docks and DVD players (and there’s a DVD lending library), and if you don’t fancy joining your fellow guests in the on-site gym you could opt for in-room yoga classes. The stylish Brasserie Max – a popular local spot – does a rather nice afternoon tea (£26) with tasty sandwiches (including the wonderfully classic cucumber variety) and irresistible cakes (try the orange meringue pie). Meanwhile, the little on-site cinema – with just 47 luscious red leather seats – screens weekly Saturday-night movies (the most interesting recent mainstream releases, as a rule), which, with dinner or afternoon tea, will set you back £35.
