The Avalon
16 Balham Hill Clapham London SW12 9EB
If only all beer gardens were as good as the one at The Avalon. Not only is it huge, but it’s been done nicely, with plenty of bamboo and other greenery to soften the edges and create an ambience of calm – perfect for post-work de-stressing. If you arrive and think, ‘what’s all the fuss about?’ you’re probably in the smaller, courtyard garden. The pub itself is lovely – big, airy, relaxed but stylish, with a successful mis-match of art deco chandeliers, Barcelona and rococo sofas and comfy leather chairs you could spend all afternoon in. The house ale is Timothy Taylors Landlord, and overall the drinks list is good, with a decent selection of classic cocktails; and the food is a few notches above your average pub grub. There is an emphasis on comfort food and British influences, but expect a few surprises on the changing menu. Inside or outside, the Avalon is a great place to be.
