You can’t avoid a happy sense of privilege if you’re lucky enough to see this spectacular sailing competition from one of the many vantage points around the island. With over 1,700 entrants, this is one of the largest of its kind in the world. With the wind in the right direction the colour from more than a thousand billowing spinnakers is impressive even to the staunchest landlubber. Fort Victoria’s free parking provides one of the best views, as the yachts are close to shore at this stage having sailed only 10 miles west from Cowes, but to catch the leading yachts you’ll need to be up early – doubly worth it if you book a table for a slap-up breakfast at the perfectly sited Boathouse.
