The ultimate private rural B&B – just one fabulous room that is your own home-from-home.
Wigmore Herefordshire HR6 9UD 01568 770 036
Situated in the pretty village of Wigmore, on the Herefordshire/Shropshire border, there aren't too many B&Bs like Abbots Lodge. For a start, it's only got one room, which is more like a small apartment if we're honest – a lovely large and bright beamed room that opens onto its own patio and boasts a dining and sitting area with log-burning stove, a small kitchen and en-suite shower. You can come and go as you please via your own private entrance, and owners John and Janet put a lot of effort into making your stay as memorable as possible, serving an excellent breakfast every morning at your own dining table, and cooking up delicious meals in the evening to those who want them (Janet was a professional chef in another life).
The location is lovely, with views across the wooded valley. You're a short walk from the ruins of Wigmore Castle by way of a direct footpath, and there are a couple of pubs in the village and an excellent local shop. You could just spend your time pottering around on the various walks and cycle routes from Wigmore, finishing up with a glass of wine on the terrace and a couple of choices from Janet's excellent seasonal menu. But if you want to get into your car, the foodie town of Ludlow is just a short drive away and the location is perfect for exploring what is a really beautiful – and relatively unknown – part of the country.
It's worth knowing that John and Janet also own a unique self-catering property, Cruckbarn, up on the hilltop nearby – well worth considering for larger groups or those in search of complete privacy.
With only one apartment style room available, we hope that guests find our accommodation a bit more spacious and relaxing than your usual Bed and Breakfast. Over the years, people who've stayed with us have written about their enjoyment of the south-facing terrace, the peace and quiet, room-service supper delivered at your table beside the log-burning stove, and the attention to detail.
Our Favourite Spot
Lying in bed with the curtains drawn back, watching the birds and looking out on the leafy terrace, garden and valley beyond.
The local area
Being on the edge of Wigmore village we are in a lovely peaceful spot, but only a hundred metres or so to a great pub and community shop, and a couple of hundred metres out into countryside walks and the ruins of Wigmore Castle. We just love the beautiful countryside around us, filled with woodland walks, historic houses, pretty villages and towns, and lots of interesting independent shops, food producers and pubs and restaurants.
Best local places to eat and drink
We are lucky to have lots of great places to eat locally. Just a very short walk from us (100m or so) The Oak pub is great for just a drink as well as a meal. The Riverside at Aymestrey, 3 miles away, is very good, and in the other direction, also about 3 miles, is the Lion at Leintwardine - a nice pub by another river! The Jolly Frog is a restaurant a bit further along the same road, specialising in seafood. A short drive away, Ludlow town has long been recognised for great restaurants and food producers. If we are going there, our first choices would be The Green Cafe, Pizza Ten, and the Cicchetti Bar which are all independently run places with great atmosphere and cracking food. We could go on, there are may more we could recommend both in Ludlow as well as the surrounding villages.
Why stay with us?
Guests that choose to return for stays with us, come to enjoy the discreet but attentive service we offer, Janet's warm welcome and great cooking, a spacious but cosy place to return to after exploring the area, and somewhere to settle into and recharge their batteries.

Coming into Wigmore on the A4110, look for the crossroads with the timbered village pub. Coming from the south, you should turn left here, from the north turn right, onto Castle Street. Follow this for about 100m until you reach a fork in the road; take the right fork and follow this for a further 100m, up a steep bank past a timber-framed cottage, and Abbots Lodge is on the left, with plentiful parking through the main gate.
