A historic hotel, pub and restaurant that has been well updated while losing none of its traditional atmosphere.
Digbeth Street Stow-on-the-Wold Gloucestershire GL54 1BN 01451 870 048
Whether you’re looking for somewhere to recharge and relax, a place for great British food, a cosy pub for a refreshing pint or a base for a short break, The Porch House will pretty much has it all. Home to a flagstoned, ultra-pubby pub out the front and a very snuggly snug at the back, an atmospheric restaurant and some pretty luxurious rooms that won't break the bank, there really is something for everyone here – plus it's situated in the heart of one of the Cotswolds' most alluring towns in Stow-on-the-Wold. Not only that, but it has a claim to the title of oldest inn in England with beginnings dating as far back as 947AD. In the dining room, don’t miss the scratched-on symbols on the 16th Century fireplace – said to ward off witches – and listen out for rumours of long-forgotten underground passageways. But this doesn’t make for an eerie setting – the history only adds to the classic and charming atmosphere of the place, as do the chunky oak beams and other traditional features. There are 13 rooms in all, and each makes the most of the historic building while still providing every contemporary comfort, including flatscreen satellite TVs, tea- and coffee-making facilities, mineral water and Nespresso machines. If you only have time for food, tasty highlights include: honey straight from a hive for breakfast, the lightest, yet cheesiest gnocchi known-to-man, and melt-in-your-mouth chocolate fondant. No surprise at all, then, that is has been named 'New Pub of the Year' 2016 by the Good Pub Guide. Get there before everyone else does.
