Tudor Farmhouse Hotel

Situated in the quiet village of Clearwell, just a few miles from the Welsh border, this hotel has been a labour of love for owner Colin and Hari Fell, who moved here more than ten years ago and set about transforming into the kind of place they would like to stay themselves. It's an old farmhouse basically, with a series of outhouses behind, and they've given the interior of the old stone buildings a crisp, contemporary look, with bright, light guest rooms with fabulous bathrooms and all comforts, from underfloor heating and flatscreen TVs to Nespresso machines, robes and White Company toiletries – and of course free and plentiful wifi.

Outside there's a garden with a stream, and the downstairs restaurant serves beautifully cooked food fuelled by the best local ingredients – indeed it was Cotswold Life's 'Restaurant of the Year' a few years ago. The welcome is warm, and it's hard to imagine anyone not liking this place, especially given the prices, which are pretty reasonable considering the quality of what's on offer.
