The Sussex Guild – a group of Sussex-based designers, artists and makers – puts on several shows around the county throughout the year, but its permanent base is a wonderful little shop in the tranquil setting of seventeenth-century Southover Grange in Lewes, once the childhood home of the diarist John Evelyn. The shop’s crammed with all sorts of lovely things, from prints and ceramics, to glassware, textiles, jewellery and even the odd piece of (pricey but beautiful) furniture. If you do nothing else you can always stock up on the greetings cards by local artists.  Finish off a visit with a stroll around the tranquil Grange Gardens, Lewesians’ favourite picnic spot; a hole-in-the-wall kiosk sells teas, sandwiches and ice-creams in summer.
