Duke of York’s Cinema

Preston Circus Brighton BN1 4NA

Brighton’s much-loved arthouse cinema is a prominent local landmark, thanks partly to the bizarre sculpture on its roof – a giant pair of legs in stripy stockings, doing the cancan. Part of the Picturehouse chain, its stimulating programme includes special events such as live opera by satellite from the New York Met. Open since 1910, it has a cosy vintage interior and a balcony bar.
