Best bash of the year in Hull is the Freedom Festival – just 'Freedom' to the locals – which takes Hull's central role in ending the slave trade and championing freedom and turns it into a huge arts and culture fest, held over three days every September. You get to experience over 200 free events, from sensational sound-and-light shows and world-class street theatre to fire installations, roaming drummers and musicians, art spectaculars and some plain downright weirdness (like the mobile one-person cinema we saw one festival). It's very Hull, and a really popular local weekend out that packs out the Fruit Market area.

Freedom 2017 runs from 1 to 3 September.
