Chesil Beach

Chesil Beach Dorset

The 18-mile-long Chesil Beach is a geographical oddity – a 15-metre-high bank of pebbles enclosing England’s largest tidal lagoon, the Fleet Lagoon. Made up of a hundred million tonnes of pebbles and plagued by dangerous currents, it’s not good for swimming, but is very popular for sea-fishing and attracts a huge variety of marine life and birds, particularly along its wilder stretches. It’s an atmospheric place, and small children will enjoy clambering up the steep banks and gathering pebbles, but don’t be tempted to try and walk its length: Bill Bryson described it as “the most boring walk I’ve ever had”.
