Thorn Farm Barn

Thorn Farm Totnes Devon TQ9 7NF 01237 459 974

We say

A self-catering converted barn with contemporary interiors and truly restful rural views, this is a great little find for large families or groups of friends who want a country retreat that's near the interesting shopping and relaxed vibe of Totnes, just three miles away. The barn is set within five acres of farmland, and is under an hour's drive from the gorgeous sandy beaches of South Devon. There are lots of walks in the countryside around, or sit at the outdoor wooden table to think, paint, write or chat, or on cooler days gather around the large, thick-set wooden kitchen table for cosy meals. The floors are wooden, there are pretty cushions dotted about the place, throughout the barn are the huge, distinctive canvases of local artist Graham Fish, and interesting, original wallpaper graces the walls in most of the five bedrooms. There's a large sitting room-cum-dining room with two huge and comfy leather sofas and a wood burner, while children will like the snug for watching TV. We love the giant blackboard, open shelves with coloured glasses and Ipod dock in the kitchen, and the colourful displays of fresh flowers in almost every room that greeted us on arrival. You'll also get a bottle of local Sharpham wine in the fridge, and a delicious pack of homemade fudge. Soft furnishings and crockery are a mix of arty finds and functional things from Ikea. There are five good-sized bedrooms, including a large king-size double with an ensuite shower room and French doors out to a gravel terrace, and an equally large double with ensuite shower and free-standing roll top bath (our favourite). Each of the bathrooms offers fragrant organic hand wash from local company Aromatika. The friendly owners live next door, so you'll always have someone to ask if you have a problem. There's off-road parking for 4 cars, and all bed linen, towels, electric and central heating are included. It sleeps 10 in total, there's a highchair and cot available, and it's dog-friendly too. One quibble: filter the water, which tastes terrible.
