The family-run Winking Prawn is a vibrant beach café a short hop across the road from North Sands. There's a spacious decked eating area, and in the sunshine it's an unpretentious hangout packed with, well, everyone. Little kids love the sandpit - there's also a dressing up chest, a mobile toyshop and an ice cream van in the adjoining yard. For regular Salcombe-goers, the Prawn is very much part of the holiday experience for a local ice cream, coffee or ginger beer. Evening meals aren't always the best value - your best option in the high season is to come for the nightly early evening barbecue which offers fairly good fish, meat and veggie options. They don't serve granary bread, though, only white baguettes - how come, we wonder?
