Sheltered by Lantern Hill and a breakwater, Ilfracombe’s pretty fishing harbour is a scene as British as buckets and spades. Get an ice cream, find a bench among the lobster pots and enjoy watching the fishing boats or embark on one yourself for fishing and wildlife trips run by numerous operators in season (£12–£20; times by tide). It's no surprise that this charming harbour, littered with anchored boats, is the focal point of the village. Surrounded by eateries serving wonderfully fresh fish, it's always worth a little dig around in the pockets to sample some just-off-the-boat produce.
