Long Valley Yurts at Sykeside

UK England North West England Cumbria Ullswater

The best of both glamping worlds – a stunning, away-from-it-all location and a great site choc-full of facilities.

If you ever wanted the best of both Lake District glamping worlds – a stunning, away-from-it-all location and a great site choc-full of facilities – then Long Valley Yurts have picked a beauty in Sykeside. It's full marks for the mountain setting – amazing views, high-quality walks straight from the site, wild swimming in nearby Brothers Water, and adventures and lake cruises on Ullswater, just down the valley. But there's no trade off in terms of facilities, even in this spectacular location, with on-site country pub (the Brotherswater Inn), a weekend bar and terrace with table footy and pool, well-stocked shop and even satellite wifi.

Your home for the duration is one of two 18-foot Turkmen-style yurts, with all the glamping comfort you might expect – proper beds on a raised wooden floor, wood-burner and oven, full kitchen with gas hobs, and everything else from firewood and games chest to rugs, throws and fairy lights. Cotton sheets, feather pillows and duvets are supplied – pretty much all you need bring is towels and a torch. Your only neighbours are the local sheep in the nearby fields, while hot showers, toilets and the washing-up area are a short walk from the yurts on the main part of the site.

This is real Lake District adventure country, with full-day hikes right from the yurt door, including the climb of Helvellyn via the infamous ridge of Striding Edge (not for the faint-hearted). The steamer down on Ullswater runs around the lake daily and opens up the whole of the lakeshore for walks, picnics and lazy days by the water. Or the guys at Long Valley can book you onto a whole host of outdoor activities, from stand-up paddle-boarding to bushcraft.

Sykeside is actually a pretty good base for seeing the whole of the Lake District, with Ambleside and the central and southern Lakes only a short drive in the other direction. Mind you, to get there you have to drive over bleak Kirkstone Pass (there's a pub at the top) and down and then back up the tortuous narrow road known as The Struggle – you are definitely going to need a beer in the Brotherswater Inn when you get back! By the way, the other Long Valley Yurts locations in the Lakes are just as spectacularly sited – at Moss Howe Farm in the Winster Valley (where they have hot tubs too!), at Great Langdale in the central mountains, and on the shores of Windermere at Low Wray.
