Well kept traditional youth hostel in an enviable position near Coniston Water.

YHA Coniston Holly How

Far End Coniston Cumbria LA21 8DD 0845 371 9511

We say

YHA really do know how to snag the most enviable locations when it comes to activity breaks here in the UK. This traditional stunning lakeland house, YHA Coniston Holly How, is only minutes away from the village and Coniston Water and deservedly prides itself as a major Mountain Leader Training and Assessment base for hikers of all ages and levels. Make no mistake: this is purely the type of place to quickly dump your gear in either a private room or one of their eight-bed dorms and hurriedly get outside and start exploring the surroundings. There's something for everyone from water sports and sailing, to mountain biking and hiking, in some of the country's most breathtaking trails. Back at the hostel, you've got two comfortable lounges with sofas (one has a TV), a drying room to hang your muddy boots and clothes, and a large communal kitchen. There's also a licensed bar and restaurant which serves decent hot meals throughout the day. For those wishing to camp, there are camping pitches available on the front lawn, close to a beautiful pond, in a wooded area which has an impressive 300 different types of tree species, including the Lake District's tallest Monkey Puzzle tree which is over 150 years old. What we're excited about is the introduction of their new tipis, which come with their own altar fireplace, a mattress on a raised, partly carpeted wooden floor plus there's also storage space, for those who prefer to camp in a bit more comfort. Ultimately, this is a lovely and friendly base camp to allow you to shake off your life stresses and reconnect with the wild and beautiful outdoors in an indescribably spectacular part of the Lakes.
