A quirky boutique hotel with 23 contemporary rooms and a cottage, individually designed by British artists.
20 Chapel Street, Penzance, Cornwall, TR18 4AW 01736 365 664
Smack bang in the middle of Penzance, it would have been all to easy to buy up this 12th-century Georgian mansion and run a traditional old hotel bragging on and on about its top location. Not so for the Artists Residence Penzance, where time and effort has been put in to create an accommodation masterpiece that stands out from the crowd with its unique boutique design. Outside, the elegant town house masks a contemporary interior with 9 arty rooms, each individually designed and decorated by Cornish and British artists, and 14 'House' rooms designed in their signature eclectic style. This vibrant mix of old meets new makes for a truly original hotel and you'll struggle to pick from the array of stylish choices. From a sea-themed double to a comfy de-luxe suite, along with wacky street art murals and simplistically chic twin rooms, there is something for everyone. They have also recently added a three-bedroom cottage which is the perfect seaside retreat for a family. The key word is comfort across all the accommodation: the rooms have en-suite bathrooms with eco-friendly toiletries, flatscreen TVs and free Wi-Fi throughout, while the cottage has an open-plan living room and kitchenette with log burner and a luxurious bathroom with copper roll-top bath and walk-in rainfall shower. Breakfast is served in the ground floor restaurant, The Cornish Barn, using fresh local produce, and the restaurant is also open for lunch and dinner, serving a selection of small plates and meat and fish dishes from the smoker. There is a large beer garden complete with table football, ping pong, fully stocked bar and BBQ for summer days, and an indoor bar-lounge with log burner and a focus on local ales and cocktails crafted using Cornish spirits. The sum of it all, is a stunning hotel with unique designs, delicious food and a thoroughly laid back atmosphere - all topped off with a central location that, yes, they should still brag about! And the good news is they have other, equally enticing locations in Brighton, East Sussex, and in Pimlico, London.
