A cool activities hostel – well-organised, welcoming and clean: a perfect budget base for Newquay and around.
83-87 Mount Wise Newquay Cornwall TR7 2BP 01637 877 776
High on a hill above Newquay, and with wonderful sea views from its public areas and many of its rooms, Môr Lodge is maybe the town's premier hostel, and a very cool place it is too. It sleeps around 130 people in a mixture of en-suite double rooms and in bunk-bedded dormitories of various sizes, in which you share one of their rather sumptuous newly refurbished bathrooms. Rates include a buffet breakfast, and there is a decent café and bar serving drinks and snacks, along with a brand-new self-catering communal kitchen (kitted out with oven, hob, microwave and fridge) for preparing your own food, which you're free to consume in any of the common areas. They also have a large games room, a sun terrace that makes the most of the awesome views and free wifi throughout. But perhaps the nicest thing about Môr Lodge is that it's in the heart of Newquay, surveying all before it on its hillock above the town centre, and just a five-minute walk from the beach and seafront. It's naturally a great base for all Newquay's beaches – Fistral, Towan and others, which are only a short walk away – and in the evening it has a sociable vibe that makes it a destination in itself. The hostel also runs surfing, paddleboarding and coasteering courses and can put you in touch with all manner of activities operators nearby, plus they rent out surf and other equipment to those folk who don't need instruction. It's probably not the ideal place for a quiet weekend away for a loved-up couple, but otherwise it's a tremendous budget alternative right in the heart of Newquay. Good for groups, too.

Môr Lodge is situated in the centre of Newquay. Cominginto town by car on the A392, past Hendra Holiday Park, take the 2nd exit onto Trevemper Road (still the A392) and then go straight over the next roundabout onto Gannel Road. At the next roundabout take the 3rd exit onto Mount Wise and the hostel is on the right, opposite a car park. From the train station, it's about 20 minutes' walk – turn left onto Cliff Road, continue onto Berry Road and veer right onto Mount Wise. It's closer to the bus station: turn left onto St Georges Road and at the top of the road turn left onto Mount Wise. From the airport, a taxi will cost about £15 and take about 20 minutes, or there is a shuttle bus to the bus station every 20 minutes.
Mainly open March–November + New Year's Eve and some private bookings in January/February.
