Hanson Drive Fowey Cornwall PL23 1ET 01726 833 866
Fowey Hall doesn’t look like the sort of hotel that welcomes wild children and (well behaved) dogs with open arms. Built in 1899 for a wealthy Cornishman, it has retained the feel of a majestic family mansion, with antique furnishings, classic artworks, ornate décor and sweeping views over the sail-littered estuary. Nonetheless families are at the heart of this luxury set-up, and when your children get whisked off by friendly hotel nannies to collect eggs from the chickens, it’s a sure sign you’ve hit the weary parent's hotel jackpot. Whether you choose to sink into a plump sofa with the newspaper, relax under the spell of a massage in the spa, take a dip in the pool and hot tub, or loosen your purse strings in Fowey's waterside boutiques, Fowey Hall Hotel is all about giving parents a chance to chill out. All children (up to eight years-old) are offered two complimentary hours of childcare a day in the brilliant Ofsted-registered crèche, and once you’ve got the kids back in your hands the easy life doesn’t stop: from family dining to baby essentials, every detail is covered. There are games and toys galore, DVDs and books, a cinema room, Wii’s, table football, a zip wire, a trampoline, and a line up of fishing nets, buckets, spades and wellies, begging you to stroll to the nearby beach in any weather. Yet when bedtime comes the baby listening system (or a babysitter if you’d prefer) means you can enjoy the divine Cornish cuisine and fine wines in a sophisticated ambience that has no resemblance of a typical family hotel. Having once been a frequent haunt of author Kenneth Grahame, it’s believed that Fowey Hall could been the inspiration behind Toad Hall in Wind in the Willows. Whether or not this is true, it is certainly a place for messing around in boats like Ratty, and coming back to a life of luxury and banquets.
