Rick Stein, Porthleven

Mount Pleasant Porthleven Cornwall TR13 9JS 01326 565 636

We say

Just to prove there is more to Cornwall than Padstow, Rick Stein has recently taken his restaurant chain down to picturesque Porthleven, where locals must be pleased they don't have to schlep all the way to the north coast any longer to enjoy some of the county's best fish and seafood. It's the usual Stein formula – great, mainly local ingredients, put together with some skill and style, with a nod to ethnic and international recipes, served in a cool and contemporary environment, in this case right on the harbourside in Porthleven. It has some competition – Porthleven is no Padstow, but it's not a bad place to eat already, and hosts a food festival every year – but we reckon the new place with not only survive but thrive in what is an excellent location, formerly home to another fish restaurant. The schtick here too, is a good one, with lots of tapas-styke sharing dishes –grilled sardines, lemon sole goujons, Thai fish cakes, etc – for £7.95, or a short menu of pricier mains if you want the more traditional restaurant experience, including a tasty sumac chicken and Stein's excellent Indonesian seafood curry.

They say

With fantastic harbour views, our Porthleven restaurant offers sharing plates of local and seasonal produce all inspired by Rick’s travels as well as mains such as Singapore chilli crab, fish from the quay and rib eye steak.
